Uganda Savannah Birding Safari

Experience the beauty of Uganda’s birding hotspots on this 5-Days Uganda Savannah Birding Safari. Your journey begins at the Uganda Wildlife Education Center, where you’ll discover over 170 bird species, including the rare Northern Masked Weaver and the African Fish Eagle. The next day, set off for the Mabamba Wetlands, home to the iconic Shoebill, and explore various other water birds by canoe. 

Then, you’ll drive to Lake Mburo National Park, with exciting stops for birdwatching along the way. The park offers incredible sightings, from the Lilac-breasted Roller to the African Grey Hornbill. Day 4 immerses you further in Lake Mburo’s diverse ecosystems, spotting wetland and savanna species. On your final day, enjoy a morning game drive along the lakeside, seeking out elusive species like the Blue-headed Coucal and the Papyrus Gonolek.

Day 1
Birding at Uganda Wildlife Education Centre

Start your adventure with a morning pick-up from your hotel or airport, heading to the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (UWEC) in Entebbe. Explore the center’s rich birdlife, with over 170 species, including rare Weavers, such as the Northern Masked Weaver, and numerous flycatchers and raptors like the African Fish Eagle and African Goshawk. After a birding session, continue to the Botanical Gardens for more sightings and wrap up the day at the sewage lagoons.

Birding at Mabamba Wetland

After an early breakfast, go on a boat trip to Mabamba Swamps, a top spot for Shoebill sightings. Paddle through the swamp, watching for species like Squacco Heron, Goliath Heron, Pygmy Goose, and the rare Sitatunga Antelope. En route back to Kampala, stop at another swamp, searching for species such as the Papyrus Gonolek and White-winged Warbler. Return to Entebbe for the night.

Drive to Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast, go on a scenic drive to Lake Mburo National Park. Stop at the Equator for a photography break and birding along the way, where you can spot species like the Lilac-breasted Roller and Emerald-spotted Wood Dove. Upon reaching the park, enjoy a delicious lunch at Rwonyo Restaurant and then go on a late afternoon game drive along the Zebra Track, encountering species such as Black-bellied Bustard and Temminck’s Courser.

Birding in Lake Mburo National Park

After lunch, head out for an evening game drive along the Kigambira Loop for additional birding opportunities. The park offers fantastic birdwatching, with species like Red-faced Barbet and Black Collared Barbet.

Afterward, drive back to Entebbe/Kampala, with a lunch stop along the way.
